Growing 15 Bean Soup

In Ms. Wicker's 5k class we surveyed our successful growing experiments. The students clearly have green fingers. We germinated 15 bean Soup last week. We learned that the root always seems to grow first and talked about how a seed needs water first to grow. We watched the seeds swell , saw the seed coat split and a shoot emerge. Over the course of the week it became clear that the shoot was a root. We also learned that the split peas grew roots first, and were then followed by the beans. We planted the seeds into soil and they are now up about 12 inches.

We redid the experiment with bird seed and this time I videotaped it. The kids were delighted with the seeds again. They saw how some seeds put out one root, some put out several roots. We were able to talk about differences again - how cool.

The students also sowed seeds for the Memory Garden: dill, chamomile, catnip, parsley and snapdragons.

By the way, the peas are poking their heads just through the soil.

I'm SO impressed with your interactions with these kids -- it's all sounding fabulous. (Not that I'm surprised, of course!)

Sprouting 15 bean soup is such a great activity-- we don't think of 'seeds' in bags at the grocery still being alive. What fun. Let me know if you'd like some wheat seed (a MG in Columbia gave me a big bag) -- she'd bought it to create wheat grass pots for inside winter interest!

Cheers,
