In my quest to sample all the delights of Halifax we went to the NS Art Gallery this week. I didn't take the camera and probablycouldn't take photos anyway so I have put together some links so you can check out what we saw, if you want!
This was my first time at an art gallery with the kids ... it went relatively well. First order of business snack- so off to the cafe. The kids were drawn to anything that was not static so they spent the longest amount of time in front of the television. The contemporary native Canadian artists gallery had some beautfully animated native tales- the kids were enthralled by the tale of the Great Beaver and story of the spring flood. They also liked going up and down the stairs and through the twisty corridors.
The first exhibit we saw was by Graeham Patterson called Woodrow. It's a really unusual installation ... as you can see. The kids were intrigued. After that we went up to the Egyptian exhibit- the kids definitely had more fun riding up in the elevator than looking at this exhibit. This exhibit was on loan from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. There were exquisite items - from the tiniest decorative object to large sarchophagi - I have to go back and gaze.
I almost forgot the lovely treasure: Maud Lewis. Her teeny tiny house is now inside the musem and many of her folk art paintings line the walls of the gallery. It's worth checking this site out which documents her work and the restoration process: Maud Lewis. Here are some of her pictures.
