The highlight of birding day two was flushing a Great Blue Heron out of the Heritage Pond at the Botanical Garden. It gracefully lifted its body, dangling long legs, and headed into the woods. That's about the extent of my sightings of herons, generally. Today showed the benefit of "birding". We stopped and took time to look into the woods and found it sitting, hunkered down on a branch. We got an obstructed, profile view - first. In a few minutes it moved across the valley and sat down on a clearer branch facing us. It almost looked like a different bird, no neck, lots of nuptial feathers. Rather like an old man hunched down with a beard, somewhat like this photo taken by Thomas Quine, Vancouver, BC.
